National mourning after government plane crash near Smolensk

Polish government plane with president Lech Kaczynski and first lady Maria Kaczynski crashed near Smolensk in Western Russia on 10 April 2010 when attempting to land. President Kaczynski, first lady and other leaders and dignitaries, together 96 persons died. The delegation was flying to Russia for the 70th anniversary of the Russian massacre of more than 20,000 Polish prisoners of war in the village of Katyn during World War II.
